Fortissimo Musical Box by Jules Cuendet, c. 1895
Rare Semi-Helicoidal Interchangeable Musical Box, c. 1880
With two 4-air cylinders and one spirally-pinned single- air cylinder, nickel-plated double-spring movement, fine comb of 160 teeth, complete, zither, speed-control, tune- indicator, manual tune-change and control for pushing cylinder away from the comb, in quarter-veneered rose- wood case with kingwood borders, paneled lid and cylin- der-storage drawer, width 32 3⁄4 in. (83 cm), cylinders 14 in. (35,5 cm). The so-called "Semi-Helicoidal" style of musical box allows the performance of a long piece of music on a cylinder pinned for continuous play. Ord- Hume writes that the helicoidal movement was purport- edly devised by François Conchon in 1878 and pro- duced under the model name Étoile. Later patents for helicoidal movements were also granted to Arthur Junod of Ste-Croix. See Ord-Hume, "The Musical Box" (1995), pp. 95–96 for a discussion of this type. – A particularly rare and complex musical box!
Playing six dance airs, with nickel-plated movement, comb of 76 teeth (complete), zither attachment, tune- indicator, tune-sheet and rosewood-veneered case with inlaid lid, wd. 20 1⁄2 in. (52 cm), cylinder 8 1⁄4 in. (21 cm), five nicely replaced treble teeth, dampers need attention. – (3/3–4) – € 300/500 – (320/2)
