Key-Wind Musical Box by Nicole Frères with Bellini Repertoire, c. 1855
No. 31693, playing eight airs from the operas "Puri- tani", "Somnambula" and "Norma", Gamme No. 897, with 97 teeth in comb (complete), brass bedplate, in- stant-stop control, tune-sheet and label of "Wales & Mc.Culloch, Importers of Musical Boxes, 32 Ludgate St., London", in fruitwood case with endflap, red inte- rior and ebony stringing, width 20 1⁄2 in. (52 cm), cylin- der 13 in. (33 cm), with large steel key. Movement in excellent, restored playing condition. – A well- arranged musical box with an unusual program dedi- cated to the work of a single composer. – Literature: Nicole Frères No. 31847 with identical program was sold at Auction Team Breker on 25 May 2013, lot 437.

Nr. 226636, mit 12 lebhaften Titeln, begleitet von ab- schaltbarer Trommel und 7 Glocken unter der Boden- platte, 79 Töne im Musikkamm (komplett), glatte Bo- denplatte, Ratschenaufzug mit Holzgriff, poliertes Ge- häuse, innen rot gebeizt, Mahagoni-Deckel mit Händ- lerplakette: "Charles, Nephew & Co., Old Court House St., Tank Square, Calcutta", Gehäusebreite 80 cm, Wal- zenbreite 54 cm, 2 Zähne fachmännisch repariert, Soc- kel mit leichten alten Wurmschäden. Die Lautstärke der Trommel kann durch Einstellen des Abstandes zu den Schlegeln reguliert worden. Die Mechanik befindet sich in exzellent spielendem Zustand. Diese Spieluhr wurde für den indischen Markt hergestellt.
Hidden Drum and Bells Musical Box by L'Epée for the Indian Market, c. 1865
No. 226636, playing twelve very lively airs accompa- nied by optional drum and seven bells mounted below the bedplate, with 79 teeth in musical comb (complete), smooth bedplate, wood-handled winding lever and pol- ished case with red interior, mahogany lid and retailer's plaque: "Charles, Nephew & Co., Old Court House St., Tank Square, Calcutta", width 31 1⁄2 in. (80 cm), cylin- der 21 1⁄4 in. (54 cm), two nicely repaired teeth, old wood beetle tracks in base. The drum is mounted on an adjustable block whose distance from the hammers can be adjusted via a wing-screw underneath: a rare and early form of volume control! Charles, Nephew & Co. – electro-platers, gilders and merchants – operated in Calcutta from 1848 to 1870. Movement in excellent playing condition.
