Kline, Cologne. – Literature: Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", p. 275. – Automata with weighted feet were a feature of early production by Jean Roullet. The additional weight allowed the figures to stand without the support of a wooden base. This particular piece appears as No. 4 in Roullet's catalog of 1878. The costume of the African Guitarist is a minia- ture version of the life-size flautist's which featured on the cover of the catalog.
Contemporary Musical Knitting Lady Automaton by Michel Marcu, 20th Century
France, with painted bisque head incised "Marcu", open mouth, fixed blue eyes and red mohair wig, seated on turned-wood chair containing single-air going- barrel movement stamped "Marcu, France", which causes the figure to revolve both hands and look up and down and from side to side, in blue silk costume and lace cap, height 21 in (53,5 cm), on velvet-covered base. An amusing contemporary automaton similar in style to Roullet et Decamps "Bébé Tricoteur".

Politischer Puppenautomat von Christian Bailly, Paris. Nach dem klassischen Vorbild "Pierrot Ecrivain" von Gustave Vichy, um 1895. Er zeigt den 35. Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten an seinem Schreibtisch bei offizieller Korrespondenz: ein Telegramm an den so- wjetischen Premier Nikita Chruschtschow. Charakter- kopf aus Gips, braune Glasaugen, modelliertes Haar, an einem Schreibtisch, mit Schreibfeder und batteriebetrie- bener Petroleumlampe aus Messing, bekleidet mit grau- em Wollanzug, gepunkteter Krawatte und handgenähten Lederschuhen, Korpus mit Federwerkmotor, Mechanik und Walzenspielwerk, mit "C.B.-"Messingschlüssel, Höhe 55 cm, Grundmaße 30 x 45 cm. – Die Gedanken des Präsidenten scheinen aber tatsächlich bei Marylin Monroe zu sein, deren Photos auf dem Schreibtisch liegen, das Lampenlicht wird schwach, sein Kopf sinkt nach vorne, und er nickt leicht ein. Aufwachend dreht Kennedy das Licht wieder hoch und schreibt weiter. Die Bewegungen der Puppe werden von der Melodie "Hap- py Birthday" begleitet und erinnert an "Happy Birthday, Mr. President", Marylin Monroes unvergesslicher Auf- tritt am 19. Mai 1962 im Madison Square Garden, nur 3 Wochen vor ihrem plötzlichen Tod. – Literatur: Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", S. 74–75. – Dieser zeitge- nössische Automat von Christian Bailly komplettiert seine politische Trilogie: nach Präsident Barack Obama, 2013, und Vladimir Putin, 2014. – Ein einmaliges Por- trät!

Depicting President Kennedy at work at his desk, with plaster-composition character head, brown glass eyes and moulded hair, seated at ebonized writing desk with quill pen and a battery-powered brass lamp, dressed in grey wool suit, spotted tie and hand-sewn leather shoes, with single-air going-barrel movement in body playing "Happy Birthday" and brass key signed "C.B.", height 211⁄2in.(55cm),base12in.(30cm)x173⁄4in.(45cm). – Inspired by Gustave Vichy's automaton "Pierrot Ecrivain" of c. 1895, Bailly portrays the 35th president of the United States engaged with official correspon- dence: a telegram to Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. – The President's thoughts, however, appear to be on the photographs of Marilyn Monroe that lie on his table, for – as the lamp light dims – he pauses and his head falls, as though on the verge of sleep. Kopf aus Papiermaché, bernsteinfarbene Glasaugen, Mund und Augenlider beweglich, Hände aus Masse. Bekleidet mit schwarzer Samthose, Schärpe, Hemd, roter Weste mit goldenen Bordüren und dazu passen- dem Hut, auf rundem Sockel, Gesamthöhe 71 cm. Kor- pus mit Federwerkmotor, Mechanik, Blasebalg und Walzenspielwerk mit einer Melodie. – Der Affe hebt die Zigarettenspitze hoch, zwinkert, plappert, zieht an der Zigarette und atmet den Rauch wieder aus. (Der Rauch wird durch den rechten Arm in den Blasebalg geleitet und durch den Mund wieder ausgeblasen.) – Mit Schlüssel und Roullet-Typ-Starthebel. Mit einigen Än- derungen restauriert, inklusive Rauchmechanismus in gut funktionierendem Zustand!

(62 cm), with base 28 in. (71 cm), with steel key and brass Roullet-type stop/start button. Restored (with some alterations), good working and smoking condition!

618: Musik-Puppenautomat "Die strickende Dame" von Michel Marcu, Frankreich, 20. Jh. € 350,-
Mit bemaltem Biskuitporzellankopf, signiert "Marcu", offener Mund, feststehende blaue Augen und rote Mo- hair-Perücke. Die Dame sitzt auf einem gedrechselten Holzstuhl mit dem Federwerkmotor für das Walzen- spielwerk mit einer Melodie und der Mechanik (gestem- pelt "Marcu, France"). Die Puppe bewegt beide Hände, als würde sie stricken, hebt und senkt den Kopf und schaut nach beiden Seiten. In blauem Seidenkostüm mit Spitzenhäubchen auf samtbezogenem Sockel. Gesamthö- he 53,5 cm. Ein amüsanter Automat im Stil von Roul- let & Decamps "Bébé Tricoteur". Funktioniert.
