"Champion Velocipede" Automaton with Black Rider by Stevens & Brown, c. 1870
Connecticut, with "EXLCR" pressed-cloth head, origi- nal paint and costume, stamped brass "gloved" hands and booted feet, velocipede with spoked iron wheels and open-spring motor with bell-crank for zig-zag motion as boy pedals, length 12 in. (30 cm), with key, split seam on boy's head, paint on velocipede worn, otherwise good original working condition. – Literature: Blair Whitton, "American Clockwork Toys", 1981, p. 36. – Patented in February 1870, Stevens & Brown's "Cham- pion Velocipede" was offered for sale by Althof Berg- man in several variations, including the scarce African American version seen here.
