1005: Musik-Puppenautomat "Rauchender Schuljunge" von Vichy, um 1900 € 3.400,-
Kopf aus Mischmasse, feststehende braune Glasaugen, offener, lächelnder Mund, Stupsnase, sitzend in einen weiten Korbsessel, sein rechtes Bein schaukelt, eine Zigarettenspitze in der rechten Hand, zweiteiliger Sok- kel mit dem Federwerkmotor, der Mechanik mit Blase- balg und einem Walzenspielwerk für eine Melodie, vermutlich in Original-Kleidung, violettfarbener Samt- anzug und Soldatenkappe, Höhe 50 cm, mit Stahl- schlüssel und neuerem Starthebel. Gesicht und Hände neu bemalt, Korpus aus Pappmaché (ohne Rückenteil), der Sockel wurde nicht zur Inspektion geöffnet. – Der Automat stellt einen Jungen dar, welcher versucht, das Rauchen zu lernen. Er hebt die Zigarettenspitze an den Mund, um zu inhalieren, dreht den Kopf zur Seite, hu- stet, bewegt seinen linken Arm und schwingt mit dem Bein. Der Rauch wird durch die Zigarettenspitze und den Körper zum Mund geleitet. In funktionierendem Zustand, der Blasebalg benötigt eine Revision für die Rauchfunktion. – Literatur: Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", S. 110. – Ein ungewöhnlicher, amüsan- ter Raucher-Automat.
Musical Smoking Schoolboy Automaton by Vichy, c. 1900
With plaster-composition head, fixed brown glass eyes, open smiling mouth and snub nose, sitting on balloon- backed basket chair, swinging his right leg, a cigarette- holder in his right hand, on two-tiered wood base con- taining going-barrel motor, single-air musical move- ment and bellows, dressed in probably original purple velvet suit and soldier's cap, ht. 20 in. (50 cm). With steel key and later brass stop/start. Face and hands repainted, papier-mâché torso without back, base not opened for mechanical inspection, alterations. – The automaton depicts a young boy "learning" to smoke. He raises the cigarette-holder to his lips to inhale, then turns his head away, coughs, moves his left arm and swings his leg. The smoke is cycled from the cigarette holder, through the body and out through the boy's mouth. The automaton is in working order, however the bellows require an overhaul/adjustment in order for the figure to smoke. – Literature: Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", p. 110, for a similar model depicting a schoolboy on a top hat. – A smoking automaton with an unusual and amusing sequence of actions, worthy of sympathetic restoration.
