Germany, with composition head, painted blue eyes, moulded hair swept back into ringlets, articulated foot and arms, seated at carved wood sewing machine sup- ported by a Waltherhausen-type cabinet, on grained base with paper floor covering, the single-air hand- turned mechanism causing the sewing machine flywheel to spin as the lady appears to operate the treadle and move a piece of velvet back and forth under the needle, ht. 9 3⁄4 in. (25 cm), working condition, figure and part of sewing machine loose, nose chipped, paint wear on hair and cabinet. A rare occupational manivelle toy.

Gartenszene mit anthropomorphem Affen vor einem Backofen, elegant gekleidete Bäckerpuppe, Kopf aus Papiermaché, cremefarbener Seidenanzug, Perücke, Monokel, feststehende Glasaugen, beweglicher Mund, geschnitzte Hände und Beine, Backofen aus bemalter Pappe, Brote aus Gipsmasse, künstliche Blumen und Farne, Glocke an Holzmast. Schwarz bemalter Sockel mit Federwerk, Mechanik mit 5 Nockenscheiben (ge- prägt "J. Phalibois, Paris") und Zwei-Melodien- Spielwerk. Der Affe dreht seinen Kopf, nickt, bewegt den Mund und holt ein Blech mit Backwaren aus dem Ofen, dabei läutet die Glocke, um die Kundschaft auf die frische Ware aufmerksam zu machen. Mit erneuer- tem Glasdom, Gesamthöhe 68 cm, mit Schlüssel in Größe Nr. 13. – Ein seltener und amüsanter Automat in gut funktionierendem und unrestauriertem Zu- stand!
Musical Automaton Monkey Baker by Jean-Marie Phalibois, c. 1880
Depicting a garden scene with painted card oven, bell- post and elegantly-dressed monkey baker with papier- mâché head, articulated mouth, periwig, monocle, fixed glass eyes and carved wood lower limbs, on ebonized base containing two-air pull-string cylinder movement, going-barrel automaton movement (stamped "J. Phali- bois, Paris") and five boxwood cams that cause the baker to turn his head, nod and chatter as he pulls a tray of brioches from the oven and rings the bell to announce the arrival of his wares, dressed in original cream satin suit with soutache trim, ht. 27 in. (68 cm) including replacement custom glass dome, with size 13 steel key. A rare and amusing occupational automa- ton, in good unrestored working condition.

Kopf aus Masse, fein gemalte Augen, modellierte Haare und Hut, Original-Bekleidung und -Bemalung. Der Orgelspieler steht hinter einer Drehorgel mit Kurbel, 3 geschnitzte und bewegliche Erzgebirge-Figuren auf der Orgel (Katze, Hund und Seemann), Holzsockel in Edel- holz-Imitation, seitliche Handkurbel, 36-töniges Wal- zenspielwerk für eine Melodie. Der Orgelspieler dreht die Kurbel und bewegt den Kopf, während die drei kleinen Figuren wild im Kreis tanzen. Höhe 30 cm, gut funktionierender Zustand. – Dabei: Titelblatt der Aus- gabe 102 "MBSI News Bulletin", Oktober 1991, mit Abbildung eines ähnlichen Automaten. – Ein sehr in- teressantes Ausstellungsstück für Orgelspieler und - sammler!
With composition head depicting a man with painted eyes, moulded hair and hat, standing behind model barrel organ with crank and three articulated Erzge- birge-type figures on top (cat, dog and sailor), on graine-painted base with hand-turned 36-note move- ment playing one air and causing the grinder to crank the handle and move his head in time to the music while the three figures dance wildly, in the original yellow cotton jacket, cravat and striped breeches, ht. 11 3⁄4 in. (30 cm), working well. Original paint and fabric. – In addition: MBSI cover, issue 102, with illustration of a similar piece. – One of a series of 'occupational' toys of early German manufacture; also see lot 604 in this auction. – An interesting exhibition piece for barrel organ collectors and operators!
