– Literature: Bailly "Automata, the Golden Age", pp. 104 and 244. – The title of Vichy's automaton was probably a reference to Jacques Offenbach's 1864 operetta "Jeanne Qui Pleure & Jean Qui Rit" ("Joan who Cries and John who Laughs). The 'sister' piece to this automa- ton, titled "Jeanne qui Rit", depicts a smiling girl on a school bench. – The expressive features of both figures are characteristic of the automata produced under Gus- tave and (his son) Henry Vichy's creative collaboration during the 1890s. Similar faces are also found modeled in wax as a pair of school boys and in bisque as the laughing/crying "surprise" doll by Leon Casimir Bru. – Jean nods and shakes his head in a circular motion as he peers at the book, raises his right arm to his eyes as though crying and kicks his left leg impatiently. Vichy adds a characteristic element of humor to the scene as the boy's donkey-like ears, appearing to take on a life of their own, flap up and down. A classic Vichy automa- ton in good, original working condition.

Junger Mann mit Spazierstock und Werbeplakaten, Papiermaché-Kopf, Original-Bemalung, braune Glasau- gen, braune Echthaar-Perücke, Hände aus Biskuitpor- zellan, Woll-Hose und -Umhang, Mantel in Schotten- muster, Taschenuhr und Kette, cremefarbener Seiden- Zylinder; samtbezogener Sockel mit Federwerk, Me- chanik, Walzenspielwerk und sich drehendem Ständer mit 2 zusätzlichen Plakaten; Gesamthöhe 71 cm, mit Schlüssel. Ein kleiner Finger ersetzt; die Mechanik paßt zu diesem Automat, sie ist jedoch nicht original. – Lite- ratur: Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", S. 351, ein ähnlicher Automat, der als "Frappeur" (Fensterklopfer) beschrieben ist. – Die Figur klopft mit dem Stock an ein Schaufenster, erregt damit die Aufmerksamkeit der Passanten, dreht den Kopf und hält ein Plakat in die Höhe, 2 weitere Plakate drehen sich zu ihren Füßen. Mit Werbung für das Stärkungsmittel "Pâte Pectorale et Sirop de Nafé de Delangrenier", illustriert mit Szenen von Pierrot und Columbine.
Unusual Advertising Automaton by Lambert, c. 1900
Depicting a gentleman with cane and advertising plac- ards, with papier-mâché head, original paint, brown glass eyes, brown hair wig, bisque hands, velvet- covered base with single-air going-barrel movement and rotating stand for two additional cards, dressed in wool breeches and cape, tartan overcoat, pocket watch on chain and cream silk top hat, ht. 28 in. (71 cm) in- cluding hat, with key, one little finger replaced, spring- driven movement is appropriate but not original to the automaton. – Literature: Bailly, "Automata, the Golden Age", p. 351 for a similar automaton described as "Frappeur" (Window Tapper). – The figure was de- signed to attract the attention of passers-by by tapping his cane on a shop window, turning his head and hold- ing aloft his placard while the spring-loaded stand rotates to display additional information. – Here the automaton displays three trade cards for the tonic "Pâ- te Pectorale et Sirop de Nafé de Delangrenier" illus- trated with scenes of Pierrot and Columbine. Interesting piece for collectors of advertising and medical memo- rabilia.

Biskuitporzellankopf, geprägt "S.F.B.J. Paris, 24, France", offener Mund, feststehende blaue Glasaugen, durchsto- chene Ohrläppchen mit Ringen, blonde Mohair-Perücke (Original), bekleidet mit Wintermantel aus Samt (Origi- nal), dazu passender Filzhaube mit Bändern, Fellmuff und Ziegenlederschuhen mit geknöpften Gamaschen. Auf samtbezogenem Sockel mit Federwerkmotor, Me- chanik und Walzenspielwerk mit einer Melodie. Ge- samthöhe 63 cm. Mit Kurbel und Decamps-Starthebel. – Das Mädchen dreht seinen Kopf, bewegt beide Arme, zieht die rechte Hand aus dem Muff und hebt sie zum Mund, bewegt sie, als würde es Handküsse werfen, während es seine Augen auf- und niederschlägt, steckt die Hand wieder in den Muff zurück und hebt mehrfach mit Bedauern seine Schulter. – Der Automat ist in den Katalogen von Gaston Decamps sowohl unter dem Namen "Bébé Manchon" sowie auch "Bébé Frileux" zu finden. – Mit sehr lebensechten Bewegungen in gut funktionierendem Zustand!
"Bébé Frileux" Musical Automaton by Decamps, c. 1920
With bisque head impressed "S.F.B.J. Paris, 24, France", open mouth, fixed blue glass eyes, pierced ears with earrings and original blonde mohair wig, the left arm holding a fur muff, the right arm articulated at the elbow and shoulder, with single-air going-barrel movement, dressed in the original velvet winter coat, matching ribbon-trimmed felt hat and side-buttoned white kid boots, ht. 24 1⁄2 in. (63 cm), on characteristic velvet-covered base of 8 in. square, with crank key and Decamps stop/start. The automaton appeared in Gaston Decamps' catalog under the title "Bébé Manchon" as well as "Bébé Frileux" ("Shivering Child"). – The girl turns her head, move her hands apart, slowly raises her right arm to throw kisses, then returns her hand to the muff and shrugs her shoulders as though sighing or shivering. – An automaton with unusually lifelike movements, in good working order!
