Musical Walking Automaton by Gustave Vichy, c. 1880
With unsigned pressed bisque head by Gaultier, closed mouth, fixed pale-blue glass eyes with cobalt outline, feathered brows, pierced ears (tiny flake on right pierc- ing-hole), bisque shoulder plate, shapely papier-mâché body and metal hands, on red-painted metal base con- taining two-air going-barrel movement with "acorn" stop/start and brass key stamped "G.V", dressed in an extraordinary rose silk-taffeta trained ball gown with black lace overlay, height 21 in. (53 cm). – The lady glides forward, rotating her right hand, glancing from side to side and occasionally tilting her head back to survey the scenery in more detail through the lorgnette she lifts in her left hand. – The construction and cos- tuming create the illusion of statuesque form and figure in this very elegant early Vichy automaton. Working.
