Automaton Whistling Figure of Dr. Eisenbarth by Karl Griesbaum, c. 1930s
Triberg, carved limewood figure of a sinister-looking gentleman holding a surgical knife, with articulated head, going-barrel movement, bellows and whistle for the tune "Ich bin der Doktor Eisenbarth", height 12 in. (31 cm), with key. The figure depicts Johann Andreas Eisenbarth, medicine man and surgeon, who appeared at fairs and markets in Germany accompanied by his troop of musicians and dancers. Born in 1663, he was apprenticed as an optician in 1684 and purchased The Gilded Apple, an ale house in Magdeburg, from which he continued to practice in 1703. Credited as the inven- tor of a star-needle and polyp hook, he was given the title of "Royal Prussian Court Advisor" by the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm I. A fascinating piece of medi- cal memorabilia.

Rare Whistling Boy Automaton by Griesbaum, c. 1930s
Triberg, marked in pencil "No. 2", probably a prototype by Matthias Griesbaum, carved limewood figure de- picting a barefoot boy seated on a tree stump, with articulated head, two-part base containing bellows, whistle and going-barrel movement wound from the underside, height 9 in. (23 cm). Working order. – Un- usual features of the figure – such as the impractical position of the winding arbour and the location of the sound aperture at the back of the tree stump – suggest that it was built as a prototype for a model which did not make production. The movement plays the tradi- tional pedlar's song "I Must Leave this Town".
