Rare Musical Advertising Automaton by Leopold Lambert, c. 1915
With black-painted bisque character head impressed "N" in script, modeled as a grinning man with well- defined features, inset glazed porcelain teeth, brown glass eyes, curly black mohair wig, bisque hands hold- ing aloft a hinged clip for a business or visiting-card and gilt-decorated lacquered papier-mâché scallop shell for additional cards, on velvet-covered base con- taining the open-spring motor playing a single-air as the figures revolves gracefully on tip-toe, dressed in well-preserved original tartan silk jacket with red satin lining, ruffled shift, yellow breeches, fuchsia fez and dancing shoes, height 23 1⁄2 in. (60 cm), original paint, unusually fine and bright original costume showing only minimal wear, good working order, with steel "LB" key and brass stop/start. – In a 1919 issue of "Le Jouet" magazine Lambert advertised a "splendid assortment of mechanical pieces for display windows, well suited for use in confectioners' shops, green-grocers' shops, per- fume shops, haberdashers' shops, tobacconists". The long-duration spring motor allows the automaton to revolve for almost fifteen minutes on a single winding. It was presumably designed for a counter rather than a window, with the shop's name (here a reprint of Lam- bert's own card) displayed on cards in the automaton's hand and tray. The figure detaches from the base for storage purposes in its original Lambert factory box marked "Nègre". A rare and early advertising automa- ton, in near-mint original boxed condition. The only example of its kind that we have seen to date.

Kopf und Hände aus Biskuitporzellan, mit Hemd, ge- streiftem Jackett und Filzhut, vor Staffelei mit Malka- sten und einer Miniatur-Version von "Leda mit dem Schwan" sitzend. Sockel mit Federwerkmotor, Mecha- nik und Reuge-Walzenspielwerk mit 2 Melodien. "Ru- bens" dreht den Kopf, nickt, schwingt das linke Bein vor und zurück, bewegt die Farbpalette mit der linken Hand, während er mit der rechten Hand den Pinselstrich "ausführt". Gesamthöhe 33 cm. Ein charmantes Au- tomaten-Portrait vom flämischen Barockmaler Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), in exzellent funktionie- rendem Zustand!
